Origins

The Blue Jays joined the American League in 1977 as baseball’s first Canadian expansion team, playing originally at Exhibition Stadium in conditions that could include snow in April. Pat Gillick’s player-development operation, and later a big-market willingness to spend, turned the club into a 1980s contender. The founding story lives in the Team Origin quiz.

Dave Stieb’s pitching, George Bell’s 1987 MVP, and a rising core of homegrown talent set up the early 1990s. SkyDome, opened in 1989 with a retractable roof, became a symbol of Toronto’s arrival as a major-league city rather than a cold-weather experiment.

History

The 1992 club beat Atlanta; the 1993 club beat Philadelphia. Joe Carter’s walk-off homer off Mitch Williams in Game 6 of 1993 is the most famous moment in Canadian baseball. Roberto Alomar, Devon White, John Olerud, Paul Molitor (Brewers chapter elsewhere), and a rotation that included Jack Morris (Tigers chapter elsewhere) and Juan Guzmán made those teams both star-laden and deep. José Bautista’s 2011–15 peak — including the 2015 ALDS bat flip — and the 2015–16 clubs that reached the ALCS restored relevance. Josh Donaldson’s 2015 MVP and a roaring Rogers Centre made those years feel like a renaissance. John Schneider’s 2023 club won 89, reached the Wild Card, and fell to Minnesota in a sweep — Vlad’s 26 homers, Bichette’s .306. The 2024 team won 74, finished last, and missed October — Vlad’s .323 and 30 homers the bright spot. Schneider’s 2025 Blue Jays won 94, took the East, beat the Yankees in the ALDS and Seattle in the ALCS (Vlad ALCS MVP), and pushed the Dodgers to an 11-inning Game 7 at Rogers Centre before Los Angeles prevailed — an out away from a third title.

Championships

The Blue Jays have won two World Series championships and three American League pennants — Canada’s only Fall Classic titles, plus a 2025 return that came within an out of a third banner.
