The Toronto Blue Jays joined the American League in 1977 as baseball’s first Canadian expansion team, playing originally at Exhibition Stadium in conditions that could include snow in April. Pat Gillick’s player-development operation, and later a big-market willingness to spend, turned the club into a 1980s contender. Dave Stieb’s pitching, George Bell’s 1987 MVP, and a rising core of homegrown talent set up the early 1990s. SkyDome, opened in 1989 with a retractable roof, became a symbol of Toronto’s arrival as a major-league city rather than a cold-weather experiment.

The 1992 and 1993 clubs remain the franchise’s summit. Managed by Cito Gaston, they won consecutive World Series — first over Atlanta, then over Philadelphia. Joe Carter’s walk-off homer off Mitch Williams in Game 6 of 1993 is the most famous moment in Canadian baseball. Roberto Alomar, Devon White, John Olerud, Paul Molitor, and a rotation that included Jack Morris and Juan Guzmán made those teams both star-laden and deep. No Canadian club has won the Series since, which has only magnified those two Octobers.

A long competitive dip followed as the 1990s core aged and the AL East grew brutal. Roy Halladay’s Cy Young seasons, José Bautista’s 2011–15 peak — including the 2015 ALDS bat flip — and the 2015–16 clubs that reached the ALCS restored relevance. Josh Donaldson’s 2015 MVP, a roaring Rogers Centre, and a Canadian fan base that stretches far beyond the GTA made those years feel like a renaissance. Later rebuilds produced Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and another cycle of contention in the 2020s.

In 2025 Toronto won the American League pennant and pushed the defending champion Dodgers to a Game 7 that went 11 innings at Rogers Centre before Los Angeles prevailed. Yoshinobu Yamamoto closed out the visitors; the Jays had been an out away from their first title in 32 years. Two championships, a unique national following, and that 2025 October now sit beside Carter’s homer in franchise memory. The Blue Jays remain Canada’s team: expansion origin, back-to-back glory, and a modern club still chasing a third banner in a roofed downtown cathedral.
