Washington Nationals Trivia Quizzes

The Washington Nationals began in 1969 as the Montreal Expos, the National League’s first Canadian club. Jarry Park and later Olympic Stadium hosted a bilingual baseball culture that produced Hall of Famers and almosts. The 1981 Expos, split by a strike, reached the NLCS and lost to the Dodgers on Rick Monday’s homer. Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Tim Raines, and later Vladimir Guerrero made Montreal a development powerhouse. A 1994 club that was 74–40 when the strike canceled the season is still argued as a stolen pennant. Contraction threats and failed stadium politics ended the Montreal era; the franchise moved to Washington for 2005, restoring the Nationals name last used by the 19th-century NL club and echoing the departed Senators.

RFK Stadium housed the first three Washington seasons while a new park rose on the Anacostia. Nationals Park opened in 2008. Stephen Strasburg’s 2010 debut, Bryce Harper’s 2012 arrival as a teenager, and a draft-and-develop machine produced division titles in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017 — all ending in NLDS exits that earned a “can’t win in October” label. Max Scherzer’s three Cy Youngs (two in Washington), Ryan Zimmerman’s civic-face career, and a packed young core made those years exciting and unfinished.

In 2019 the script flipped. A wild-card club that was 19–31 in late May rode Howie Kendrick, Anthony Rendon, Juan Soto, and a veteran rotation to the World Series. Washington beat Houston in seven games, with Strasburg named Series MVP and Kendrick’s extra-inning grand slam in Game 7 of the NLCS as the turning-point blast. It was the first World Series title for a Washington major-league club since the 1924 Senators — and the first for this franchise, Expos years included. The parade down Pennsylvania Avenue closed a 15-year campaign to make D.C. a baseball town again.

One World Series championship, a Montreal ghost that still haunts Cooperstown debates, and a capital-city restoration define the Nationals. They are two histories in one uniform: the Expos’ unfulfilled 1994 and the 2019 club that finally won the last game. From Jarry Park to Olympic Stadium to Nationals Park, the franchise’s arc is relocation, patience, and a single October that justified bringing the National League back to Washington.
