The Texas Rangers began as the expansion Washington Senators in 1961, the second club to carry that name after the original Senators became the Minnesota Twins. A decade of capital-city struggle ended when the franchise moved to Arlington, Texas, in 1972 and became the Rangers. Turnpike Stadium, expanded into Arlington Stadium, hosted Nolan Ryan’s later no-hitters, including his seventh in 1991, and a culture of heat, hitting, and waiting. Ted Williams managed the first Texas season; Whitey Herzog and later Bobby Valentine passed through. The club was competitive in stretches — 1974, 1977, 1981, 1986, 1996, 1998, 1999 — without reaching the World Series.

The 2010 and 2011 Rangers, built around Josh Hamilton, Michael Young, Nelson Cruz, and a rotation that included Cliff Lee in 2010, finally won American League pennants. They lost the 2010 World Series to the Giants and the 2011 Series to St. Louis, the latter after being one strike away from a title twice in Game 6. Those near-misses became Texas baseball’s scar tissue. Globe Life Park in Arlington, opened in 1994, hosted that era; a new retractable-roof Globe Life Field opened in 2020, a climate-controlled answer to August in the Metroplex.

A rebuild produced a different kind of club. In 2023 the Rangers, with manager Bruce Bochy in his first year in Texas, Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Adolis García, and a veteran pitching mix, won 90 games, then tore through October. They beat Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and Houston, then defeated the Diamondbacks in five games for the franchise’s first World Series championship. García’s postseason power and Seager’s World Series MVP performance closed a 52-year Texas wait and a 62-year wait dating to the second Senators.

One title after two heartbreaks, a twice-moved franchise, and a ballpark journey from open-air Arlington heat to a roofed cathedral define the Rangers. They are not the original Senators of Walter Johnson, but they are the club that took Washington’s 1961 expansion slot and, after Nolan Ryan’s no-hitters and Hamilton’s MVP, finally won the last game of the year. Texas baseball’s history is patience, power hitting, and a 2023 parade that rewrote every previous almost.
