The Seattle Mariners were born in 1977, restoring major-league baseball to a city that had lost the Pilots after a single 1969 season. The Kingdome housed the early years, which were mostly losing, though Gaylord Perry won a 1978 Cy Young and a young pitching staff occasionally flashed. The franchise’s identity coalesced in the 1990s around Ken Griffey Jr., whose swing and smile made Seattle a national club, Randy Johnson’s overpowering left arm, Edgar Martínez’s designated-hitter artistry, and Jay Buhner’s power. The 1995 club, down 2–1 to the Yankees in the ALDS, won Game 5 on Martínez’s double — “The Double” — and saved baseball in Seattle as a new ballpark campaign took flight.

Safeco Field, now T-Mobile Park, opened in 1999 with a retractable roof suited to Puget Sound weather. The 2001 Mariners won 116 games, tying the 1906 Cubs for the American League’s modern high, with Ichiro Suzuki’s 242 hits, a relentless lineup, and a deep staff. They still lost the ALCS to the Yankees and have never reached the World Series — the only active MLB franchise without a pennant. That 2001 near-miss, like 1995’s joy, became the emotional core of Mariner fandom: greatness without the final round.

Ichiro’s 3,000th hit, his 2001 AL MVP and Rookie of the Year, and a hitting style imported from Japan expanded the sport’s global footprint. After a long stretch of losing in the 2010s, Seattle rebuilt around Félix Hernández’s Kingdome-and-Safeco peak, then Julio Rodríguez, a new wave of pitching, and a 2022 return to the postseason, the club’s first playoff series win since 2001. The Mariners remain a development-driven, pitching-rich club in a beautiful park, still chasing the October round that every other franchise has at least seen.

No World Series appearances, two of the most beloved players of the 1990s and 2000s in Griffey and Ichiro, and a 116-win season that still didn’t end in a pennant: that is the Mariners’ distinctive, unfinished history. From the Pilots’ ghost to the Kingdome to T-Mobile Park, Seattle baseball is defined by what it has produced — superstars, a saved franchise in 1995, a record-tying regular season — and by the one banner it has never had the chance to hang.
