Philadelphia Phillies Trivia Quizzes

The Philadelphia Phillies, founded in 1883 as the Quakers, are the oldest continuous same-name, same-city franchise in American professional sports. Early decades produced Grover Cleveland Alexander, the 1915 pennant, and then a long stretch of losing that included the 1964 collapse — a 6½-game lead with 12 to play, squandered in infamy. Connie Mack’s A’s were Philadelphia’s winners for generations; the Phillies were the National League’s hard-luck tenants, first at Baker Bowl and then at Shibe Park/Connie Mack Stadium. Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts, and the 1950 Whiz Kids pennant offered relief without a title.

Veterans Stadium housed the 1970s and 1980s breakthrough. Steve Carlton’s four Cy Youngs, Mike Schmidt’s 548 homers and three MVPs, and Tug McGraw’s closer theatrics built the 1980 champions, who beat Kansas City for the franchise’s first World Series. The 1983 pennant followed. Then came the 1993 “Macho Row” club of Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Lenny Dykstra, and Curt Schilling, which lost a wild World Series to Toronto on Joe Carter’s homer. That team’s grit became a Philadelphia personality test: loud, imperfect, and beloved.

Citizens Bank Park opened in 2004. The Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, and Roy Halladay core won the 2008 World Series over Tampa Bay and a 2009 pennant, with Halladay’s 2010 postseason no-hitter as a later jewel. Rollins’s 2007 MVP and Howard’s 2006 MVP bookended a homegrown powerhouse. After a rebuild, the 2022 club roared into the World Series as a wild card, beating Atlanta and San Diego before falling to Houston. Bryce Harper’s Philadelphia chapter, Zack Wheeler’s pitching, and a packed, hostile October crowd restored the Phillies as a national October brand.

Two World Series championships after 97 years of waiting for the first, a 140-year-plus continuous identity, and a fan base that treats baseball as a contact sport in the stands define the Phillies. They are not the city’s only historic club — the A’s left — but they are the ones who stayed. From Baker Bowl to the Vet to Citizens Bank, Philadelphia National League baseball has been about endurance, Schmidt’s third base, and the rare Octobers when the wait felt worth it.
