The Athletics are a 1901 American League original, founded in Philadelphia by Connie Mack, who managed the club for 50 seasons. Mack’s early dynasties won World Series in 1910, 1911, and 1913 with the “$100,000 infield,” then again in 1929, 1930, and 1931 with Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Mickey Cochrane. Financial reality repeatedly forced Mack to sell stars, and by the 1950s the Philadelphia A’s were a last-place club. They moved to Kansas City in 1955, where they spent 13 mostly losing seasons as a development hub often linked to the Yankees, then followed owner Charlie Finley to Oakland in 1968.

Oakland immediately produced a dynasty. The Mustache Gang of 1972, 1973, and 1974 — Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Vida Blue, Sal Bando, and Bert Campaneris — won three straight World Series, the only club besides the Yankees to three-peat in the divisional era. Finley’s colorful, combative ownership, orange uniforms, and mule mascot Charlie O made the A’s a 1970s spectacle. After a dip, Tony La Russa’s late-1980s clubs, with the Bash Brothers José Canseco and Mark McGwire, Dave Stewart, and Dennis Eckersley, won the 1989 World Series against the Giants, a Bay Area series interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake.

The 2000s Moneyball A’s, immortalized in Michael Lewis’s book, used undervalued on-base skills to reach October on a budget. Billy Beane’s operation never won a pennant in that era, but it changed how front offices everywhere built rosters. Later Oakland clubs — the 2012–14 contenders, the 2018–20 groups with Matt Chapman and Marcus Semien — kept punching above payroll. The Coliseum, with its vast foul territory and Mount Davis, was a quirky fortress until the lease ran out. After 57 seasons, the A’s played their last Oakland game in 2024.

Nine World Series titles, three cities already in the books, and a fourth on the horizon define the franchise. Since 2025 the club has played at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento while a Las Vegas ballpark is built for a planned 2028 move, with no city name on the uniforms in the interim. From Mack’s tailcoats to Finley’s mustaches to Beane’s spreadsheets, the Athletics have been baseball’s most restless original: a dynasty factory that keeps packing up, and a history too large for any one skyline.
