New York Mets Trivia Quizzes

The New York Mets were created in 1962 to fill the National League void left when the Dodgers and Giants left for California. The first club lost 120 games, a modern record, and played at the Polo Grounds before Shea Stadium opened in 1964 in Queens. Casey Stengel, the former Yankee manager, gave the expansion Mets a lovable-loser identity and a stream of one-liners. That identity flipped in 1969. The Miracle Mets, with Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Cleon Jones, and manager Gil Hodges, won 100 games and beat Baltimore in the World Series, a shock that remains the franchise’s origin myth of hope after humiliation.

The 1973 “Ya Gotta Believe” club reached another Series and lost to Oakland. Then came 1986: Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and a swaggering roster that won 108 games and a World Series remembered for Bill Buckner’s error in Game 6 and a Game 7 win over Boston. That team is still the measuring stick for Mets excellence and excess. The 1990s brought Piazza’s 1998 arrival, the 1999 wild-card club, and the 2000 Subway Series loss to the Yankees. Shea’s last years mixed near-misses, including the 2006 NLCS and the 2007 September collapse, with a passionate, demanding fan base.

Citi Field opened in 2009. The 2015 club, with a young rotation of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Steven Matz, plus Daniel Murphy’s postseason tear, won the pennant and lost the World Series to Kansas City. DeGrom’s dual Cy Youngs in 2018–19 were individual masterpieces on mixed teams. Later big-spending clubs under Steve Cohen’s ownership, which began in 2020, chased October with a New York payroll and the weight of 1986’s ghost. The Mets remain the NL’s New York club: louder, more anxious, and defined by peaks that feel miraculous because the valleys are so public.

Two World Series titles, two more pennants, and the 1962-to-1969 arc from 120 losses to champions give the Mets a history built on swings. They were born because Brooklyn and Manhattan lost their clubs, they became a miracle, they became a 1980s powerhouse, and they have spent every decade since trying to recapture that feeling in Queens. Shea is gone; the expectation of the next miracle is not.
