The Houston Astros began in 1962 as the Colt .45s, a National League expansion team that played in a mosquito-haunted outdoor park before moving into the Astrodome in 1965 — the so-called Eighth Wonder of the World and the first large domed stadium. The club renamed itself the Astros to match the space-age venue. Early decades mixed novelty with gradual competence: Jimmy Wynn, César Cedeño, José Cruz, and Nolan Ryan’s later Houston years built a regional following. The 1980 and 1986 clubs, with Mike Scott’s 1986 Cy Young and a heartbreaking NLCS loss to the Mets, established Houston as a legitimate October threat.

The 1990s and 2000s Killer B’s — Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, and Lance Berkman — produced a string of division titles and the 2005 National League pennant, the franchise’s first. Houston was swept by the White Sox in that World Series. After a brutal rebuild and a 2013 move to the American League West, the Astros constructed a new powerhouse under Jeff Luhnow and, on the field, players such as José Altuve, George Springer, and Dallas Keuchel. The 2017 club won the World Series over the Dodgers, a title later shadowed by a sign-stealing scandal that resulted in suspensions, a forfeited draft picks penalty, and a lasting stain on that championship’s public reputation.

On the field, Houston did not fade. The Astros returned to the World Series in 2019, 2021, and 2022, winning in 2022 over Philadelphia. Justin Verlander’s late-career Cy Youngs, Gerrit Cole’s peak seasons in Houston, and a homegrown infield of Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Carlos Correa (later a free agent) made Minute Maid Park an October fixture. Dusty Baker’s 2022 title, after he took over in the scandal’s aftermath, was framed as a measure of organizational resilience as much as roster talent.

Two World Series championships, a pioneering dome, a league switch, and a scandal that still follows the 2017 club give the Astros one of baseball’s most eventful modern histories. From Colt Stadium to the Astrodome to Enron Field/Minute Maid Park, Houston baseball has been about reinvention: expansion curiosity, Killer B’s near-misses, and a 21st-century dynasty that won big, was punished in the court of public opinion, and kept winning anyway.
