The Colorado Rockies joined the National League in 1993, bringing MLB to the Rocky Mountain region after a wildly successful expansion pitch. They played two seasons at Mile High Stadium, drawing a record 4.48 million fans in 1993, then moved into Coors Field in 1995. Altitude, thin air, and huge outfield gaps made Coors the most extreme hitting environment in modern baseball, a fact that has shaped roster construction, pitching strategy, and the Hall of Fame cases of every Rockie slugger. The Blake Street Bombers of the mid-1990s — Andres Galarraga, Ellis Burks, Dante Bichette, Larry Walker, and Vinny Castilla — turned Coors into a nightly fireworks show.

Walker, a Quebec native, won the 1997 MVP and hit .334 for his career with a Coors-boosted but still elite peak that eventually landed him in Cooperstown. Todd Helton, the face of the franchise for 17 seasons, hit .316 with 369 homers and a devotion to Denver that defined Rockies loyalty. The 2007 club is the October peak: Colorado won 21 of 22 games to close the regular season and sweep the NL playoffs, then was swept by the Red Sox in the World Series. That “Rocktober” run remains the franchise’s defining stretch, a two-week blur that introduced the rest of the country to purple pinstripes in November.

The 2009 and 2017–18 clubs returned to the postseason, the latter with Nolan Arenado’s defensive genius at third base and a still-unsolved pitching puzzle. Colorado has never quite figured out how to develop or import pitching that survives Coors and the road splits that come with it. Front-office philosophy, park effects, and a beautiful downtown ballpark with a mountain view have produced a franchise that is easy to visit and hard to pitch for. Helton’s number retirement and Walker’s Hall of Fame plaque are the individual monuments.

One pennant, no World Series title, and the most famous ballpark-environment problem in the sport define the Rockies. They are an expansion success as a civic institution — Coors Field on a summer night is one of baseball’s great settings — and a competitive riddle that 1993’s founders did not fully anticipate. From Mile High to Rocktober to Helton’s last years, Colorado baseball has been offense, altitude, and the wait for a pitching staff that can survive October in the thin air.
