Cleveland’s American League club dates to 1901, when the Blues were a charter AL team. They became the Naps in honor of Nap Lajoie, then the Indians in 1915. Tris Speaker’s 1920 club won the franchise’s first World Series, a season shadowed by the death of shortstop Ray Chapman, struck by a Carl Mays pitch — still the only on-field fatal beaning in major-league history. Bob Feller’s blazing fastball made Cleveland a national attraction in the 1930s and 1940s, even as military service interrupted his prime. The franchise’s early decades mixed brilliant pitching with the long wait for another October.

The 1948 team remains the high-water mark of mid-century Cleveland baseball. Player-manager Lou Boudreau, Larry Doby — the American League’s first Black player — and Satchel Paige, signed as a 41-year-old rookie, led the club to a World Series win over the Boston Braves. In 1954 the Indians won 111 games, then were swept by the Giants and Willie Mays’s famous catch. A long stretch of mediocrity followed, broken by isolated stars such as Rocky Colavito, Gaylord Perry, and later Albert Belle, Jim Thome, and Manny Ramirez. The 1990s Jacobs Field clubs, with a sold-out streak that became a civic ritual, won the 1995 and 1997 pennants but lost both World Series, the latter in extra innings of Game 7 to Florida.

In 2016 Cleveland returned to the World Series and came within one win of a title before the Cubs completed their own historic comeback. Corey Kluber’s Cy Young seasons, Francisco Lindor’s shortstop play, and a bullpen-heavy October style defined that era. The club rebranded as the Guardians for the 2022 season, taking a name from the Guardians of Traffic statues on the Hope Memorial Bridge rather than continuing as the Indians. The change closed a long public debate and opened a new visual identity while keeping the same American League lineage.

Two World Series titles (1920 and 1948), a reputation for developing pitching, and one of baseball’s most loyal Midwestern followings still shape the franchise. From League Park and Municipal Stadium to Progressive Field, Cleveland baseball has been about patience, pitching, and the belief that the next Speaker, Feller, or Thome is already in the system. The Guardians name is new; the competitive DNA — small-market resourcefulness and a century of almosts around two championships — is not.
