Arizona Diamondbacks Trivia Quizzes

The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the National League in 1998 as Phoenix’s first major-league club, playing at Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field), a retractable-roof stadium with a swimming pool beyond the right-field wall. Owner Jerry Colangelo spent aggressively from the start. Randy Johnson, signed as a free agent, and Curt Schilling, acquired in a trade, formed a left-right pairing that defined the franchise’s first peak. In 1999 Arizona won 100 games in its second season. In 2001 the Diamondbacks beat the Yankees in seven games for a World Series title, three years after expansion — and in a Fall Classic played under the shadow of September 11.

Luis Gonzalez’s bloop single off Mariano Rivera in Game 7 remains the franchise’s signature moment, ending New York’s three-peat bid and giving the desert a championship before many expansion clubs had even reached .500. Johnson and Schilling shared Series MVP honors. The 2000s brought more contention, including a 2007 NLCS appearance, then a cycle of rebuilds. Chase Field’s humidor, installed to tame the offensive environment, and the park’s unique dimensions became part of Arizona baseball’s tactical identity.

A new contention window opened in the 2020s. The 2023 Diamondbacks, often overlooked in the regular season, ran through the National League playoffs and won the pennant before losing the World Series to Texas in five games. Corbin Carroll’s rookie explosion, a versatile lineup, and a fearless October style recalled the 2001 club’s belief that a young franchise could still shock the sport. Subsequent seasons have been about sustaining that window rather than returning to the long rebuilds of the 2010s.

One World Series title in year four, a Game 7 single that ended a Yankees dynasty, and a 2023 pennant give Arizona a short history with two loud peaks. The Diamondbacks are expansion baseball done at full speed: a roof, a pool, two Hall of Fame-caliber aces, and a championship that arrived before the novelty of big-league baseball in the desert had worn off. Everything since has been an attempt to live up to that opening act.
