A Brief History of the 2026 MLB Review

Season story

How the year played out

The 2026 season belonged to Milwaukee from April to the final out. Pat Murphy’s Brewers won a major-league-best 103 games behind Jacob Misiorowski, who led the National League with a 1.80 ERA and the majors with 252 strikeouts. Tampa Bay (98 wins) and Los Angeles (100) set the pace elsewhere, while the Astros took the AL West at just 81–81, one game ahead of Texas. Leaderboards were crowded: Pete Alonso paced the American League with 43 home runs and 113 RBIs for Baltimore, Yordan Alvarez won the AL batting title at .316, and Cam Schlittler’s 1.95 ERA led the league. In the National League, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Schwarber tied with 45 homers, Gabriel Moreno hit .311 for the batting crown, and Washington’s Nasim Nuñez stole 49 bases.

It was also a year of upheaval. Boston replaced Alex Cora with Chad Tracy in late April, Philadelphia turned to Don Mattingly days later, and the Mets swapped Carlos Mendoza for Andy Green in June. The trade market was just as loud: Tarik Skubal left Detroit for the Dodgers, and Freddy Peralta went from the Mets to Tampa Bay — a move that would shape October.

Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park hosted the All-Star Game, where the American League won 4–0. Yankees slugger Cody Bellinger earned MVP with a two-run single in the first inning, and Toronto’s Dylan Cease started and won for John Schneider’s AL squad against Cristopher Sánchez and Dave Roberts’s NL. In October, the Rays swept the Yankees and outlasted Cleveland in a six-game ALCS behind series MVP Freddy Peralta, while Milwaukee dispatched San Diego in four and swept the Dodgers in the NLCS, with Jake Bauers named NLCS MVP.

The World Series went five games. The Brewers took two one-run games at American Family Field, routed the Rays 10–1 in Game 3 at Tropicana Field, dropped a 12-inning Game 4 on a walk-off single, then closed it out 4–1 in Game 5 behind Misiorowski’s second win of the Series. Catcher William Contreras hit .381 to earn World Series MVP, and Milwaukee celebrated the first championship in franchise history — 57 years after the club debuted as the Seattle Pilots, and the city’s first title since the 1957 Braves.
